My local model train club recently held a contest. The parameters were simple. We had a boxcar shell to work with. Other than that, there were no real rules. Take the shell and work your magic. There were a good variety of entries and we all had some fun. Here are photos of my abandoned boxcar. I worked from a photo I found on the internet.
The main technique I wanted to try out was the use of tinfoil to represent damaged metal. I placed some heavy duty tinfoil over the door of the car and rubbed in an impression. I used makeup sponges to prevent tearing the tinfoil. I was left with a representation of the door. I cut the door out of the side of the boxcar and replaced it with the tinfoil rubbing and proceeded to crumple it up a bit to represent a damaged door. Heavy weathering was applied after.
